This was a very lowly task, but Elijah being a great prophet taught Elisha on all things from the smallest to the greatest. Poured Water on the Hands An interesting verse is found in II Kings 3:11, "But Jehoshaphat said, Is there not a prophet of the LORD, that we enquire of the LORD by him? And one of the king of Israel’s servants answered and said, Here is Elisha the son of Shaphat, which poured water on the hands of Elijah." What does it mean that Elisha poured water on the hands of Elijah? Well, when a man is studying to be a priest in the East, there is an apprenticeship which the student must serve under the supervision of one who is already a priest. Elijah chose Elisha by throwing the mantle over his shoulder and so was responsible for his training. Part of this training included doing all kinds of menial work to teach patience and humility. When Elijah was eating (they eat with their fingers in the East), Elisha had to pour water on Elijah’s hands; this was a very lowly task, but Elijah being a great prophet taught Elisha on all things from the smallest to the greatest.
